So you think you want a balayage

It's been a long Covid and we are finally feeling comfortable stepping out of our hubs, away from our safety circles and back out into the wild (we are, right?). You feel the breeze along your skin and you take a deep breath, you turn your head to window shop and dear lord, you see your roots!

How did this happen? It has only been what, 16 months of near seclusion? Did Covid steal all my senses along with smell and taste, how did I let myself go this long? Well, we all did. Yes, even us- the beauty gurus- went dark and grey with you.

After your mild panic attack, you know what to do. You call your local refleKTion beauty hero and book the long awaited appointment...but do you know what to book for? It's been months, years! Forced to grow out in a way that only a supermax prison or an extended stay on a desert Island would offer. Time like that warrants time to achieve your hair goals. Let's talk about your options and how to manage your expectations when you step through those beautiful, welcoming salon doors.

Your stylist is someone you trust with everything, your life, dreams, secrets. We know you, we love you. But we can't read your mind and these tools will help you vocalize what you really are looking for and ensure we are both on the same page with your hair goals. So, what do you need? We are breaking down the most popular and common practices used in the salon, starting with our largest requested color services. Follow these definitions to achieve your hair color goals! A client consultation is always encouraged with all color services.

Balayage

Balayage is the technique of free hand painting highlights into the hair. It's French, it's fancy. Your colorist will achieve soft and natural gradations of light tones, darker at the root area leading to brighter ends by hand painting lightener onto the surface of your hair. Imagine what your hair would look like if you spent the summer in Hawaii, this look is what you would get. It’s perfect for those who prefer less visits and maintenance for color, although you should budget 4-6 hours of your day and $150-$350 per session. The beauty of this service is the low maintenance and the seem less grow out

  • Your desired result could include multiple sessions, hair history will determine

  • This can be a long service 30-90 minutes of application time, think of the Mona Lisa...on your head

  • Maximum processing time of 45-60 minutes

  • Glosses usually necessary- 20 minutes

  • Finish time 45-60 minutes

  • Maintenance is every 8-12 weeks for gloss plus haircut, to move up balayage you can usually stretch it up to 4-6 months

  • Price starts at $150 and can go all the way to $330 without grey coverage

Ombre

She came, she went fast. Ombre was hyper popular and on the rise in 2013. Swarms of clients wanted the full saturation brought on by this look. Look, not technique. This is where we separate balayage from ombre. ombre is more a desired look than technique. Though they are similar, the difference with ombre is all of the ends are lighter and the transition from dark to light is less diffused while balayage tends to have more dimension and a softer transition from dark to light. Bring a picture to your colorist to show them exactly what you'd like, a picture speaks more than words ever could.

  • Your desired result could include several sessions, hair history will determine

  • Application time will include 30-90 minutes, depending on desired result processing time will include 30-60 minutes, factoring in hair history

  • Maintenance is every 8-12 weeks for gloss plus haircut, to move up can usually stretch it up to 4-6 months

  • Price starts at $150 and can go all the way to $330 without grey coverage

Highlights/Lowlights

Highlights/lowlights are used to lighten or darken strands of your hair using lightener or hair color. Typically applied with a brush and encapsulated in foil for maximum and even lift/deposit. Highlights (or foils) can be placed in varying patterns and in different quantities to achieve color goals. They are often combined with a color gloss to seal the color in, make hair shiny, and perfect the tone. Consider the gloss a top coat for your hair. Our stylist can work with you to discuss the number of foils, placement, and pricing to get to your desired look.

  • Your desired result could include multiple sessions, hair history will determine.

  • Processing time will vary based on desired result/expected lift. Keep in mind, if you have virgin hair you will process more even and true to tone, those with box colored or previously colored hair will see less lift and may need multiple services to achieve their goals in a healthy manner. Don't ask us to melt your hair so you can be blonde today, we care for you, allow us to get you there at the right time. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. Maintenance is suggested for every 6-10 weeks, depending on hair goals

  • mini foil - an inexpensive way to brighten any look, your stylist can add a few face framing foils to brighten you up, or place them strategically to enhance your features and haircut.
    10-12 foils/$37-$97

  • surface foil - our version of the traditional "partial foil" with the placement of foils where you need it most, generally throughout the part and hairline.
    12-30 foils/$87-$147

  • full foil - this is where you begin to look like a space martian with a head FULL of foils.
    30-50 foil /$117-$177

  • the max - this is our fullest foil, used to create a SIGNIFICANT OVERALL color change.
    50+ foils/$147-$207
